Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons transmit information to mobile phones, Android tablets, and other devices close to the beacon to initiate an action by the device. For example, a beacon triggers a mobile device to notify the user of a special offer from a nearby retailer. BLE beacons transmit information in pulses rather than on a continuous basis. A BLE beacon only transmits data, and an app on the mobile device interprets the beacon information. The BLE communication feature of the ESP32 microcontroller enables the ESP32 microcontroller to function either as a BLE beacon or as a recipient of messages from BLE beacons.
