The increasing dynamism and variety of relationships among systems and within systems require new approaches in order for them to be developed in a manageable fashion. Systems engineering offers a structured and connected way of working that focuses on holistic and interdisciplinary systems thinking and is used for the efficient and effective development of complex systems. The subject is introduced from a systems science point of view and is followed by basic definitions and the fundamental principles of systems engineering. Furthermore, technical development philosophies, activities, and considerations along the system lifecycle are discussed.
