Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users in Slovenia, and their safety is one of the priorities of the National Road Safety Programme (NRSP) 2013–2022. In 2022, there were 85 traffic fatalities on Slovenian roads, 25% less than in 2021. The number of pedestrian fatalities was 15, the same as in 2021, although the walking passenger kilometers are decreasing in most Slovenian regions. Most traffic fatalities continue to occur on regional and urban roads.
The Slovenian police have been publishing data on traffic accidents on Slovenian roads since 1994. Previously, two separate databases were used to describe the accidents and those involved in accidents; now accidents are described in both aspects in one database containing 35 variables. The authors will analyze road accidents involving pedestrians for the 15-year period from 2008 to 2022. During this period, approximately 680 pedestrians were involved in road accidents annually. The authors will identify the role of pedestrians in accidents and determine their characteristics and the characteristics of accidents involving pedestrians. Finally, the external costs of accidents involving pedestrians will be estimated according to the methodology used in Slovenia.
