On the morning of 9 March 1979, a few days after Voyager 1 swept past Jupiter, one of the most significant discoveries of the entire mission began to unfold before the eyes of an astonished young astronomer. By this point, most journalists had departed the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, and Linda Morabito was checking the spacecraft’s line of departure from Jupiter by measuring the positions of stars off the limb of the giant planet’s satellite, Io, as part of her role on the Optical Navigation Image Processing System (ONIPS) team. At this stage, Voyager 1’s next planetary encounter, the ringed world Saturn, was 20 months and 400 million miles (650 million kilometres) away.
