This chapter introduces the historical development of spacecraft and their composition and classification, the functions of spaceborne antennas as well as the special needs with respect to the environment. General design points of antenna are summarized, including requirements analysis of spacecraft antenna mission, electromagnetic layout, platform and payload antenna design requirements for different spacecraft. Basic space environment is also given.
