The describing function method, also called the method of harmonic balance, is used to detect limit cycles in nonlinear control loops, which are structured as depicted in Figure 2.1. It can also be used for nonlinear control loops that have been transformed into such a structure. The control loop shown is referred to as the nonlinear standard control loop.
