Tyres and their performance are of great importance, when it comes to mobility and road-holding ability of heavy commercial vehicle combinations. Tyre performance is emphasized with the varying winter conditions of northern countries and to extend the vehicle dynamics studies to such conditions, a comprehensive view on how different tyres work in various winter road conditions is required. For this, tyre force measurements are needed, but performing such measurements can be difficult due to the complexity of the tyre and road condition itself.
Indoor testing laboratory with good control over the tyre and environment can be used for highly accurate measurements with good repeatability on specific road surfaces but replicating different winter driving conditions can be impossible. Opposed to indoor testing, outdoor testing rig such as tyre testing trailer, can be used on road giving possibility to measure tyres on wide variety of winter road surfaces with limitations in accuracy and repeatability.
This study presents new information about the cornering performance of heavy commercial tyres on snow, that is achieved by combining indoor and outdoor tyre measurements. Indoor tyre measurements on wet asphalt are used to validate the outdoor tyre testing trailer, which in turn is used for tyre measurements on hard packed snow. Furthermore, first comparison measurements of a few different heavy commercial vehicle tyres on snow are presented and discussed. Combining results of this study with measurements on different road conditions will result in a more comprehensive view about the tyre-road interaction of heavy commercial vehicles.
