Abstract A methodology used to forecast freight transport demand, based on the use of Input-Output models, is presented. The methodology has been developped in the framework of a study carried out in Italy in order to evaluate alternative transportation policies. After a short discussion of the issue of freight transport in Italy, this paper reviews the fundamental hypotheses of the study, the models utilized, the simulation procedures and some of the preliminary results already obtained.
