Abstract All ships should have adequate stability in all their operating conditions. This statement sounds almost too obvious and simple to deserve a serious consideration, but it raises two important questions: firstly, what is stability; and secondly how do we define ‘adequate’? We cannot even begin to answer the second until we have answered the former.
