Abstract Currently, Toyota develops hybrid vehicles by performing design, prototyping, and evaluation of each hybrid system component (such as the engine, transmission, motor, inverter, battery and so on.) concurrently with the vehicle prototyping process. Each hybrid system component is then incorporated into the prototype vehicle at a later stage of development, during which the performance of the whole vehicle is evaluated and confirmed. However, if an issue is found in a hybrid system component in this final vehicle evaluation process, the component must be re-designed, prototyped, and evaluated before repeating the whole vehicle evaluation. This requires a vast amount of time, resources, and cost. In a worst case, the vehicle production schedule might even be affected.
