Abstract The Financing of space-related business ventures is different from that of most non-space businesses, particularly when involving the space segment (e.g., satellite business such as telecommunications, navigation or remote sensing). It therefore requires dedicated know-how and structuring. The aim of this paper is to discuss the basics of financing in general and the problems associated with the financing of small satellite projects in particular. The paper gives an introduction to the business and finance-related characteristics of small satellite projects and the major finance drivers. Financial implications are discussed considering both financial feasibility and an optimum finance mix. The concluding remarks focus on those routes, which best overcome present hurdles for small satellite project finance by taking finance into account as a design parameter, and by considering appropriate countermeasures early in the new business creation process.
