The requirements and specifications for the design of rail vehicle structures from the various European regulations are presented, both for static and dynamic loads. The requirements for crashworthy design and their constructive implementation are also discussed. Based on the historical development of railway passenger vehicles, the various construction methods (in particular differential and integral construction in steel and aluminum respectively) are explained by numerous examples. Further sections of this chapter deal with the supporting structures and superstructures of metro and tram vehicles, locomotives and freight wagons. Finally, the design criteria for bogies from the applicable codes are presented. The example of a finite element calculation for a tram bogie concludes the chapter.
