The microprocessor, also termed ‘microcontroller’ or just ‘controller’, is the hardware unit used to execute embedded software. Without a good understanding of the basic structure of microprocessors it is almost impossible to optimize the timing of embedded software.

This chapter covers the basics of microprocessor technology with special regard for the aspects relevant to timing. Together with a microprocessor’s data sheet, this chapter forms the necessary basis for the development of efficient embedded software. General basics are, as far as possible, illustrated by concrete examples. The range of microprocessors used in these examples ranges from small, 8-bit controllers to 32-bit processors, as well as single and multi-core devices.
