Abstract In this paper a distributed fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme for discrete time multi-agent systems based on a filter is proposed. An FDI filter is designed such that the effects of external input disturbances on the residual signals are minimized and those of fault signals on the residual signals are maximized. These two optimal specifications are represented by H ∞ and H −. Although sufficient conditions for the existence of such filters are obtained in terms of matrix inequality feasibility conditions, an algorithm to solve them is provided to find a feasible solution such that the filters can be established.
