Non-destructive testing (NDT) of engineering components and structures represents one of the strategic objectives of many industries in automation. It enables increased accuracy, precision and speed of inspection while reducing production time and associated labour costs in contrast to manual inspection. The use of robots can provide additional flexibility and autonomy to automated NDT. Mobile robot navigation has stood as an open and challenging problem over the last few decades. Despite the significant advances in this field, researchers have yet to reach a comfortable level of satisfaction. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is now widely used in many commercial and industrial sectors, from object tracking to personal identification. Few studies have investigated the possibility of using RFID systems for underwater monitoring operations in fluvial environments. This paper presents the development of a device to collect and store data from a magneto resistance sensor for underwater corrosion monitoring using RFID. The findings show that RFID systems can be used to store data at near ranges and could be an option for underwater NDT applications. This paper also provides an investigation into RFID, transponders, and reader classification, as well as current underwater applications and their benefits in NDT.
