Traction control is a commonly used control system to improve vehicle stability and safety in automotive applications. For internal combustion engine vehicles (ICVs), vehicle control mechanisms already existing in the market such as antilock brake system (ABS), anti-slip regulation (ASR), and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) are used. Traction control stops the car from swerving while driving on a loose surface, decreases engine performance until the vehicle is able to move without skidding the wheels, and ensures optimum traction while cornering particularly on damp or icy roads. When a wheel skids, a conventional differential does not properly spread the torque to the wheels. All the pressure is directed to the skidding wheel and not to more tractable one. By applying a brake on that wheel, an electronic traction control system prevents a wheel from skidding, allowing the differential to apply power to the other wheel. This paper discuses about the history and the working of the traction control system used in traditional automobiles.
