Abstract A polynomial matrix approach to F mod G-invariant subspaces, previously introduced by the author, is used in order to establish a unified treatment of the disturbance localization problem with and without pole assignment. In this approach an F mod G-invariant subspace is equivalent with the factorization of a certain polynomial matrix; the inclusion of an F mod G-invariant subspace in a given space is equivalent with the existence of common right divisors, while the inclusion of a given space in an F mod G-invariant subspace is equivalent with the existence of common left divisors of appropriate polynomial matrices. The approach presents the further advantage that it yields, without additional computation, the feedback transformation (if it exists) which performs the localization of the disturbance.
