Abstract Hull girder ultimate strength is one of the most important aspects for the strength assessment of ship structures. The fundamental aspects in the structural assessment of hull girder strength are the buckling and ultimate strength behaviors of the plate panels, stiffened panels and the hull girder. In this paper, the focus is to describe a procedure for calculating the ultimate strength of ship structures, considering failure modes of plating, stiffened panels and the hull girder. The nonlinear stress-stain relationship is illustrated, with sensitivities of load-end shortening curve studied. Case studies, compared with real damage data and other methods, are presented as verification to the proposed procedure.
