Abstract Lifting lugs are often used as lifting arrangement for heavy objects such as transformers and containers. Failure of lugs can incur significant loss of money and possibly lives of the factory personnel. A lug was mismanufactured which led to the concern over its structural integrity to withstand the lifting loads. The structural integrity of the lug to the lifting loads was to be assessed by FEA, but the actual factory lifting condition is different from the vertical lifting force usually assumed in the hand calculations. With this in view, it becomes necessary to account for the lateral forces acting on the lug to assess the structural integrity of the lug. In this work, analytical expressions for calculating the lateral loads acting on the lug were derived. The necessary parameters were used to perform the FEA. Further, dynamic load considerations were also incorporated into the design calculations. Marked difference was found in the response of the lifting lug to the vertical and the actual loads experienced by the lug indicating that neglect of lateral loads can cause permanent deformation and possibly failure of the lifting lug. To the best of author’s knowledge, there is no previous publication in the literature to calculate the lateral forces acting on the lug in all three directions.
