This session aimed to provide both practitioners and the general audience with an overview of how managed lane facilities including limited-access, arterial and multi-modal corridors serve as an opportunity to deploy vehicle automation. The presentations provided lessons from recent, real-life examples of vehicle automation use cases being implemented on managed or dedicated lanes or facilities. Each case involves critical examination of the advantages and limitations of utilizing dedicated lanes or facilities for automated vehicles thus sharing lessons with the broader community taking the decades long interest in this topic forward. The session was bookended with a presentation on the historical perspective, with early experiments with AVs in dedicated express lanes and one focusing on developing the business case for future tests and demonstrations of the use case.
