Abstract This paper presents an initial investigation into the cost reduction for multiple production runs of nano-satellites while maintaining high-quality standards. The objective is to reduce the recurring costs significantly. Nano-satellite design and manufacturing is an important issue in less expensive space missions. NASA has set strategic plans for technological development of small satellites, of which the Space Technology 5 nano-satellites development is one. It involves developing 10 to 20 kg-class spacecraft and operating them in multi-spacecraft science missions. The vision is to fly tens to hundreds of nano-satellites in a constellation to make multiple remote and in-situ measurements simultaneously in space. Thus, we can revolutionize the scientific investigations of key physical processes explored by NASA Space Science and Earth Science Enterprises.
