Abstract In the near future, various space infrastructure will be established which include Earth observation system, communications and navigation system, on-orbit service system, space research. Many of such systems will consist of small satellites (1 to 500 kg). In this paper, the value of small satellites in the future space infrastructure and activity of NASDA and Japan in such fields will be introduced. Technological and research issues such as components/parts, constellation and formation “flying” and selection of radio frequencies for communications, and countermeasures for space debris will be presented.
