Numerous studies on train drivers’ workload have been emphasizing on subjective measures utilizing self-report techniques (e.g., NASA-TLX) or physiological measures. However, both interventions require not only additional data collections but also might be lacking in terms of precision and limited data collection capacity. Emerging empirical evidence on the usefulness of on-train-data-recorders (OTDR) to evaluate train drivers’ workload has potential to fill in this gap, especially in the knowledge field of human factor. Thus, this paper aims to utilize OTDR data to assess drivers’ workload by focusing on 84 journeys performed at the same time of day, over the same route in a duration of 30 days. Differences between routes and time of travel were investigated. Driver workloads were computed based on Balfe’s framework for human factor analysis. The results show that all OTDR parameters differed between routes and availability of sunlight. This finding indicates usefulness of OTDR data for continuous monitoring of train driver behaviors. It also validates the use of OTDR in larger context and provides insights into human factors.
