The tire-road friction coefficient is an important and fundamental parameter in vehicle dynamics. It is a physical limit that vehicles cannot exceed, and it is determined by various factors, such as the road condition and tire material. The friction coefficient is crucial information in vehicle control systems that concerns the safety of passengers, especially in autonomous vehicles. With accurate real-time friction coefficient information, the vehicle control system will work effectively. It is able to assess whether the state of vehicle motion is safe under the given road conditions. If the vehicle is considered to enter dangerous driving conditions, the control system needs to provide control inputs according to the friction limit. Additionally, the trajectory planning modules of autonomous vehicles can generate trajectories suitable for road conditions for vehicles to follow, thus preventing vehicle instability.
