Continuum robots are flexible structures whose backbone shape can be actively controlled through actuators such as tendons and fluid chambers. Often characterized by a slender design with a high length to cross-section diameter ratio enables operation in hard-to-reach environments with narrow and tortuous passages. This makes them suited for inspection tasks in a large variety of industrial settings, including spacecraft. Further, their high redundancy enables dexterous maintenance tasks such as satellite repair. In this paper, current and potential applications of continuum robots in space are discussed with regards to the needs and requirements of space robotics, with a perspective on open challenges and future research directions.
