Abstract The statement and analysis of the problems on approximating the spatial curves and complex-shaped surfaces are considered on the basis of the spline-force analogy using the virtual models of elastic bodies constructed by the finite element method in the ANSYS software. The numerical studies performed have confirmed a possibility of such an approximation and demonstrated the applicability of the linear model in the problems that correspond to large displacements and strains in calculating elastic bodies. To improve the approximation near the surface boundary, we propose that the numerically found quantities of the middle surface inclination and curvatures should be used or, if it is possible, their analytical values. We show the efficiency of using the virtual elastic body to approximate the central part, when extrapolation of the surface being approximated is possible.
