This chapter deals with the equilibrium of the gravitational, aerodynamic and hydromechanic forces and moments acting on a sailing yacht and the implications thereof for the performance. An important aspect, the dependence of the minimum sustainable apparent wind angle on the aerodynamic efficiency of the sails and the hydrodynamic efficiency of the underwater-body is discussed in some detail. Other subjects covered are the dependence of the driving force, heeling force and efficiency of propulsion on the sheeting angle and the conditions of sailing.
