This paper presents case studies on the feasibility of a decentralised demand-driven logistics model in sparsely populated area in Finland. A digital logistics platform was initially developed and piloted in Central Ostrobothnia’s rural area and later in Lapland’s sparsely populated area, alongside integrating another digitalised marketplace platform. During Lapland pilot, the focus of the platform was on local food supply, where the model integrated information on the whole network of cooperation, i.e. food production facilities, processing, terminals, flexible transport, and customers. In addition to field demonstrations, information was collected through surveys, interviews, online surveys, and workshops with a wide range of stakeholders. The experiments showed that: 1) The marketplace and the logistics platform are best suited to a business environment with many small players who can collaborate to save resources and create competitive advantage. 2) A business network of several small actors needs a neutral actor as “referee”, who also owns the platform. This role is appropriate for the public sector, i.e. one or more municipalities. 3) In sparsely populated areas, the inherent challenges of logistics optimisation in a large area are difficult to overcome solely through longer deviations from main routes.
