Daily media reports included Soviet assertions that Gemini 5 was a military surveillance mission and not a pathfinder for a lunar flight duration as America had claimed. However, the true nature of the mission in pushing the limits of human spaceflight was becoming clearer as each day was ticked off. Having passed the halfway point of the mission, the crew requested a relaxation in the amount of tasks they were expected to accomplish each 'evening' as they tried to get some rest after a full day of activities. Personal comfort was also an issue to be addressed, as the crew reported irritations from the medical sensors and their growing beards. As the flight settled down, so the crews' appetites improved and their water intake gradually increased, which pleased the medics and raised confidence that the crew would be able to complete the mission in good health.
