Abstract This chapter examines the potential role for hydrogen in future vehicles. The chapter opens with a look back at the history of the car before focussing on fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) as part of a wider family of electric vehicle technologies. Issues of safety, refuelling practicalities and technological innovation are considered. The chapter closes with consideration of the vehicle types most suitable for hydrogen-fuelled FCEV propulsion.
