This paper reports the development and execution of an experimental procedure which could be used by automotive human factors researchers for investigating effects of distracted driving. The experimental procedure is called as direction following in distracted driving (D3). D3 examines the influence of suppressed articulatory rehearsal mechanism (ARM) on drivers’ eye movements in a naturalistic driving environment. D3 paradigm is characterized by establishment of an experimental procedure by emphasizing on the parameters of—direction input, lane-setting, distraction inducement, speed-range, distance, and vehicular platform. In this study, the suppressed ARM has three conditions: complex suppression (CS), simple suppression (SS), and non-suppression (NS). 30 drivers were engaged for driving an instrumented car on a two-lane experimental track maintaining driving speed of 20–25 and 40–45 kmph (i.e., speed range) in equal halves (randomized) of driving for 1 km with starting grace distance of 250 m (i.e., distance). Participants of NS group drove the vehicle without any distraction whereas the other two groups, i.e., the participants of SS and CS groups were exposed to suppression of ARM. The eye movement behavior of participants was examined on the measure of fixation duration on the areas of interests (AOIs), i.e., signboards. It was found there were significantly lesser fixation durations under CS of ARM in comparison with SS and NS. On the basis of the obtained results, it can be concluded that under CS the drivers faced difficulty in processing details of target information visually.
