Management, as a kind of professional activity, implies two main aspects: the correct goal setting and the choice of optimal methods for achieving the goal, taking into account available resources. Road safety management in any country in the world aims to reduce the costs of road traffic accidents (minimizing the number of deaths and injuries in a road traffic accident (RTA) and socio-economic damage). However, even a clear understanding of the goal and possible tools to achieve it, the availability of competent performers and their professional activities do not guarantee the sustainability of the trajectory of movement towards this goal. This paper discusses an innovative methodological approach for the transport sector to quantify the sustainability of processes that ensure road safety. The sustainability of processes that ensure road safety is considered using the example of country statistics on road traffic accidents in the medium term (2004…2021) and urban accident statistics in the short term (within 300 days of 2021). It has been established that, in general, the process of ensuring road safety in Russia during 2004…2021 (medium term) can be characterized as relatively sustainable. With regard to processes that ensure road safety (within 300 days of 2021) in the largest Russian cities in the short term, the conclusion about sustainability over time is true for St. Petersburg, but not for Moscow.
