First of all, the various types of railways (railways, urban and underground railways, light railways and tramways, rack railways, funicular railways, etc.) and their legal basis are presented. The systematics of railway vehicles as well as that of tramway vehicles are explained, also using examples. Basic principles of track guidance follow, whereby the interaction of vehicle and track is dealt with in an introductory manner. Influences on the cross-section of rail vehicles as well as the energy supply of electric railways are further topics. Statements on the importance of the railway in passenger and freight transport in Germany and on the rail vehicle industry worldwide conclude the chapter.
