The contact between vehicle wheel and rail is a very complex phenomenon that can be considered as an imperfect link because of the high concentrated stresses that occur, the relative sliding of the wheelset with respect to the rail and the presence of dust, rain, sand or even ballast stones. Simulation of this dynamic changing contact and the consequences for wheel and rail wear of the tram on Pont de Sambre in Charleroi is the subject of this case study.

The software VI-Rail allows predicting wheel and rail wear with a very high precision during different operational conditions: new versus worn wheels and rails, influence of speeds, different curve radii and friction coefficients, etc.

First a measurement campaign was done to determine the rail profile, track gauge, speed of the trams and profiles of the wheels after different mileages.

The second phase of the study concerns the multibody dynamics analysis to determine by simulation wear profiles of wheel and rail in different conditions. Both the complete tram and the local track were precisely modelled.

Several scenarios were considered in which various parameters were modified (e.g. rail profile, track gauge, inclination of the rails, vehicle speed, etc.). The analysis results showed the location, shape and size of the damage on the rail and on the wheel, which allowed determining the cause of the measured wear and proposing an appropriate solution.
