Most steering based ADAS functions have been designed under the assumption that a driver input disturbs the automation while maintaining the vehicle in its lane. Quite similarly to brake actuation, manual steering is often interpreted as an intention from the driver to take over the manual control of the steering. The resulting ADAS functions are discontinuous and display limited usability. New types of traffic accidents emerge.

    Collaborative steering is an evocative metaphor, which suggests that the driver may interact with the automation, rather than being excluded during automated driving. It is motivated by the observation that “two is better than one” and emphasizes that autonomy is not about separation or isolation but is a matter of consistent connection and relations of mutual influence. In order to go beyond the classical form of driver-automation interaction, a multilevel haptic collaborative steering control framework is proposed within the limitation of massproduced steering hardware. Three functions have been developed to realize the concept proposed: interaction, arbitration and inclusion. They enable the driver to intervene with the automation both temporarily as a local deviation and permanently as a manually triggered re-routing.
