This introductory chapter looks at the historical origins of satellite navigation and timing systems. It looks at the very first ideas presented for this and includes the development of the first satellite navigation system, the U.S. Transit system and its Russian counterpart. It concludes with the developments and projects leading up to the creation of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System.
