In continuation of road or rail connections, ferries operate mainly on the marginal seas and to islands. They are operated according to fixed timetables and often in a shuttle service between two ports. Established ferry routes are being maintained on the Baltic and North Sea, in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, but also off the coasts of other continents. Most of these ferries transport both commercial vehicles and passengers with their private cars and are therefore described as passenger and car ferries, in short ro pax ferries (Figs. 5.1 and 5.2).
