Abstract In this paper, some model representations on a process of hardened surface layer formation are presented; they were developed on the basis of the analysis of physical processes that occur in the course of micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Also described are the technique and results of the experiment, which made it possible to obtain the hardened oxide layers (similar to MAO ones by their properties) by means of spark discharges on the surface of specimens produced from aluminum alloys.
