Optimizing the flight performance of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is essential, especially for electric-driven propulsion systems, thereby it requires a proper motor-propeller matching process. This process analyzes the motor and propeller torque in search of the optimum motor speed. This method can help determine the optimal configuration between the propeller and electric motor to ensure the motor produces maximum power with minimal energy consumption, i.e., improving the motor’s efficiency. This study aims to analyze the motor-propeller matching problem on an axial flux brushless direct current motor configuration. The result of this analysis is a graph showing intersections between the motor and propeller torque, which indicates the optimum operating conditions for the motor. This means that the motor’s output power will produce sufficient torque required by the propeller. Insufficient torque will lead to more current consumption, and excessive torque and rpm will cause the motor to accelerate. A coupled motor-propeller power curve describing the propulsion system’s available power is also presented. A quantitative approach to find the motor’s available power and matching torque is done through a simulation using MATLAB. The produced thrust and required power for the propeller data is obtained from a propeller performance map.
