A commercial vehicle lane keeping assist system was developed, and field data was obtained to quantify effectiveness of the lane keeping assist system in a commercial vehicle application. The lane keeping assist system was found to effectively improve the proportion of time drivers spent within the lane boundaries while also not offending or annoying most drivers. The system uses lane information from a forward-facing camera along with a computer controlled steering actuator. Based on lane information, the driver is urged via handwheel torque feedback to steer in the desired trajectory. The driver is always able to override the system. With reasonable parameters, the system was tested by professional truck drivers on public roads. Eleven trucks were driven each by a dedicated driver and operated in three relatively distinct regions including Midwest USA, Pacific Northwest USA, and South-Central Canada. CAN data was recorded over the course of several months, and subjective feedback from each driver was also reported. Using the recorded data, the driver’s position in the lane was determined. Filtered lane position data was then categorized by the enabled status of lane keeping assist. This allowed lane position data to be compared between time periods when each driver had lane keeping assist engaged or disengaged. While long term data is only available for one driver, that particular driver has shown an interesting trend of improving the proportion of time spent within the lane boundaries over several months.
