Abstract Former National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) and JAXA (Japan aerospace exploration agency, established in October 2003 as successor of NASDA) experienced several mission failures on launch vehicles and satellites in past ten years. To prevent recurrence of these fatal failures, JAXA is exploring how to improve “Product Robustness” for launch vehicles and satellites development and operation. This paper presents one candidate solution to achieve “Product Robustness” for space products. This concept is based on risk based approach. This approach is adapted to thorough risk management framework. A new process that is a combination of PRA, Taguchi method, and FMEA can be located in this risk management framework and be defined as risk management elements. This concept is now being verified effectiveness for rocket engine.
