Abstract The present paper aims at reviewing a special theory of thermodynamics of materials, the Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes with Internal Variables (in short TIP/TIV): this theory can be seen as a unified and generalized tool to build models of materials and to describe the evolution of their behavior with time. This unified approach is general and rich enough to cover several different complex situations and phenomenological facts, at the same time simple enough to be used by engineers and designers. The model can be implemented into numerical design tools, such as the Finite Element Method. The text presents some applications of TIP/TIV—in particular, the development of an aging-dependent polymer constitutive law—and some illustration of the integration of the model within a composite material microstructure.
