The longest stage in terms of duration of life cycle of an aircraft is operation. The aircraft operations have significant profit for airlines; however, the average operational cost can be up to 20 times greater than the initial price of aircraft. The processes of maintenance, current repair and overhaul have the value of cost that approximately equal to 10–20% of all operational costs. Furthermore, according to International Air Transport Association, the forecast for the growth of costs associated with the specified operational processes of aircraft is 4.1%. This reason motivates airlines to search for methods and techniques to reduce these expenses without compromising airworthiness. Therefore, the primary contribution of this study is the development of a novel framework of software support for the simulation and prediction of failures and faults of aircraft components, subsystems, systems, and structures. The proposed approach was validated using daily operations aircraft data, and its usage will result in more predictable and efficient aircraft maintenance planning capability. In addition, developed software gives possibility to perform descriptive analysis of operation process of aircraft.
