When I tell people of my interest in urban planning on Mars, the most common response is laughter, then a bit of naysaying: “it can’t be done”, “too expensive”, or “why would anyone want to live there?” Throughout the remainder of the book, I will address these and many other questions that might be swirling around in your own mind, nagging at you and making you feel incredulous. In this chapter, I address a problem that few envision: how do we build settlements for humans where they will thrive on an emotional and psychological level? So much of the concerns that I typically hear are rooted in the physical challenges of living on a planet without air to breathe and water to drink, with exceedingly high radiation exposure, low air pressure, and in a location 50 million miles from any other civilization.
