Abstract Nowadays we witness a significant modernization of both railway tracks as well as signalling systems. The modernization is unarguably a right step towards the improvement to railway transport effectiveness and safety. The modernization of signalling devices is connected with the introduction of electronics, which requires a different approach in the development process of a signalling system, safety evaluation as well as in the case of its operation and maintenance. The introduction of electronics to interlocking systems calls for reconsideration of the old well-known “truths” about the signalling systems safety that are associated with conventional (i.e. mechanical, electromechanical or relay) signalling systems. Some of these arguments are still valid, some are applicable only in specific conditions or they should be revised and several of them are not valid anymore in the new perspective.
