So which life support technologies can we look forward to in the near future? Well, those science fiction aficionados among you will have an idea. Think of all those movies that feature hibernation. As we’ll see in this chapter, hibernation isn’t science fiction and hasn’t been so for years. Therapeutic hypothermia is a standard medical procedure that, with a few tweaks, can be adopted by interplanetary astronauts. Then there is nanotechnology. Think about the problems of muscle atrophy and bone demineralization. Well, nanotechnology may be the solution. And finally, there is artificial gravity.
