The chapter focuses on the measurement of relative immobility, building on prior research in urban studies that has employed various methodologies and tools to analyze and quantify the determinants and intensity of this phenomenon. Among the approaches reviewed—considered through the dual perspective of their limitations and opportunities—the chapter investigates the promising analytical potential of digital data, particularly mobile phone data, for measuring realized immobility. Given their growing availability and ease of use, such data can be effectively harnessed to examine individual mobility and immobility patterns. This is illustrated by an empirical study conducted in an Italian inner area, which utilizes mobile phone data to measure conditions of relative realized immobility and to explore the associations between these conditions and spatial, demographic, and socioeconomic factors. The findings indicate promising directions for further development of these research methodologies within the fields of urban and transport planning.
