The primordial objectives of an automotive suspension system are the ride comfort and stability. To achieve these objectives, the control system utilized for the semi-active suspension should be capable of understanding the road profile and issue subsequent control signals. Hence, a thorough understanding of the road profile is essential. In this direction, this research paper analyzes the road profile and proposes a classification method. A quarter car model is simulated with the golden car parameters as reference values. The classification is based on the sprung mass displacement and sprung mass acceleration values. The proposed classification method can be utilized as a base for control logic formation of a semi-active suspension control system. The proposed classification algorithm can be fed to the controller for taking appropriate control actions to achieve better ride comfort and stability.
