Traffic sign recognition is a first step on the way to developing context-aware cars. But this context cannot be reduced to traffic signs, even if we are talking about visual information. Cars should be able to understand current conditions and to interpret visual information in a context-situated way. In this scenario, traffic signs are just another source of information and the presence of pedestrians or the evaluation of road condition are essential cues for taking the most appropriate decisions. The context-based approach to traffic sign perception stands as valuable application of advanced computer vision and for this reason in the coming years we are likely to see a great many interesting scientific results in this area.
