Thanks to unique optical, electrical, and chemical properties, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have drawn significant attention recently, making them promising candidates for various applications in optoelectronics, bioimaging, and sensing. However, effective control over the size, surface chemistry, and optical properties of GQDs via synthesis parameters remains a major challenge. This study modified a short-heating-time solvothermal method for synthesizing GQDs with different temperatures ranging from 170 ℃ to 210 ℃. The main ingredients include graphene oxide (GO) suspension, dimethylformamide (DMF) and hydrogen peroxide. Materials structures were investigated by X-ray diffraction method and Raman spectroscopy, whereas functional groups and GQDs’ morphology were analyzed by a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and a High-resolution Transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), respectively. UV-Vis spectra of GQDs were also obtained, and their optical band gaps were calculated using Tauc plots. As for varied excitation wavelengths from 360 to 480 nm, the excitation-dependent photoluminescence (PL) emission was observed in the synthesized materials with the strongest emission bands corresponding to excitation energy of 3.26 and 3.10 eV. In addition, preliminary tests indicated that GQD samples can serve as a photocatalyst in the degradation of methylene blue (MB). These findings not only enhance our understanding of GQD synthesis but also pave the way for customizing their properties for specific applications.
